Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Sistergirl, and Brotherboy (LGBTQIA+SB) people with disability continue to face significant barriers to accessing disability advocacy, despite the clear need.

In October 2024, QAI received funding from the Queensland Government to deliver the LGBTQIA+SB Pilot Project and engaged the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC) to help facilitate the Project.

In this report, we provide an overview of the activities of the Project, including those with the advocacy sector and within the community of LGBTQIA+SB people with disability. We also summarise the themes of issues faced by the community of LGBTQIA+SB people with disability that were identified through the Project. The report then moves to a data analysis and QAI’s learnings and key findings from the Project.

The purpose of the Project was to:

  • Build the capacity of QIDAN members and the advocacy sector
  • Build the LGBTQIA+SB community awareness of disability advocacy
  • Identify advocacy gaps and service needs for LGBTQIA+SB people with disability
  • Increase the inclusion of the voices of LGBTQIA+SB people with disability within QIDAN’s systemic advocacy.

Based on this work, QAI recommends that the Queensland Government commit to ongoing funding for a dedicated specialist advocacy service for LGBTQIA+SB Queenslanders with disability, to provide both individual and systemic advocacy tailored to this community.
