QAI made a submission to the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council’s inquiry into penalties for assaults on public officers. This submission focuses on the following discrete issues:

  • The relevance of the employment of the victim to the perceived gravity, and resulting sentencing, of an offence;
  • Other principles relevant to sentencing people who commit assaults against public officers;
  • Over-policing and criminalisation of behaviour; and
  • Whether existing offences, penalties and sentencing practices in Queensland provide an adequate and appropriate response to assaults against public officers.
